Val d'Isere Resort Guide

Val d’Isère is one of the world’s great ski resorts. This high-altitude French village has evolved over the last 40 years to become the global benchmark for other alpine resorts. Not only is the vast Espace Killy ski region one of the best in Europe but Val d’Isère also packs a punch when it comes to dining, shopping, nightlife and après ski. Val d’Isère is a bustling village that is packed with shops, bars and restaurants. Whether you are looking for gourmet dining or a quick burger from the Burger House you will find plenty of options whatever your budget. By restricting car access and leaving most of the roads covered with snow, wondering the streets and alleys of Val d’Isère is a pure delight. Val d’Isère’s nightlife and restaurant scene has improved massively in recent years with long-time favorites The Lodge, Dick’s Tea Bar, Café Face and Le Blizzard ensuring that holiday makers and second home owners are well catered for. Val d’Isère’s skiing is second to none being both extensive and high altitude. The village itself is one of Europe’s highest ski resorts at 1,850m with the ski area topping out at a dizzying 3,480m. Val d’Isère has also greatly improved its non-skiing offering in recent years. The completion in 2009 of the vast leisure centre has added swimming pools, squash courts, gyms, climbing facilities, spa and wellness and much more. If you are looking to buy a property in the French Alps then Val d’Isère is often high on any perspective buyers list. If you do find an apartment or chalet available for sale in Val d’Isère then you are advised to act quickly. Tight planning laws have severely restricted the amount of new development and properties for sale are in high demand.

Property in Val d'Isere

Property in Val d’Isère is understandably some of the most sought-after real estate in the Alps. The combination of fine dining, high-altitude skiing and a lively and charming resort has attracted savvy property investors over recent years.

A recent tightening of planning laws has severely restricted the stock of available apartments and chalets for sale and, as a result, property prices are high.

If you do find a prized chalet or penthouse apartment for sale in Val d’Isère then you are advised to act quickly. Supply is severely restricted and never likely to match the insatiable demand. New build apartments for sale have been few and far between in recent years and buyers may need to look at older properties and be prepared to renovate.

Val d’Isère is also home to some of the most spectacular chalets in the Alps. Many of the older chalets were sold over the last 20 years and have now been demolished and replaced with some jaw-dropping alpine architecture.

When you are looking to buy a property in Val d’Isère you are likely to consider the three main distinct areas of the village, each with its pros and cons.

Le Fornet is one of the most scenic regions of Val d’Isère and home to plenty of traditional Savoyard chalets – many of which have been extended and renovated in recent years.

Cheaper and further down the valley La Daille is dominated by some high-rise buildings and a popular hunting ground for more affordable apartments for sale.

One of the few ski-in ski-out locations is around the village of Le Legettaz. If you don’t mind being a short drive or taxi hop from the action in the centre of Val d’Isère, this is a great option for families with terrific views and easy access to the slopes.
