Samoens Resort Guide

Samoens is one of the most charming and traditional ski villages in the French Alps. Now car-free, the centre of the village dates back to medieval times and is a French heritage site that hosts sporting cultural events year-round. With endless summer and winter activities on offer it is not hard to see why Samoens is a popular resort with families. The historic cenre also has plenty of bars, shops and restaurants to keep the whole family happy. With Geneva little over an hour away, Samoens in a popular choice for alpine property investors looking to buy an apartment or chalet in a large ski region but with easy weekend access. While Samones lacks any ski-in ski property in more than makes up for this with a good selection of apartments in some charming large chalet buildings. Second home owners here are as likely to be hiking and biking in the summer as they are skiing down the slopes of nearby Flaine or Les Carroz in the winter. Property prices in Samones remain relatively affordable for the French Alps. Apartments are available from EUR 250,000 while detached chalets can be found under EUR 1m. As with many other French ski resorts, planning is now tightly controlled with the supply of quality new build apartments and chalets for sale relatively low.

Property in Samoens

As with most resorts in the French Alps, the market has been moving quickly in the years post-covid with buyers out numbering sellers.

 

This has resulted in prices rises of around 10% in both 2021 and 2022.

 

Samoens has a good selection of detached chalets that tend to be found on the outskirts of the village and a short walk to the historic centre.

 

Prices rise as you get closer to the ski lifts and many older chalets and now being re-developed and modernised.

 

Apartments range in price considerably with newer buildings tending to benefit from upgraded communal facilities and wellness areas that are popular with buyers and their rental guests.

 

If you are looking to buy a new-build property then you are often able to reclaim the 20% VAT on the purchase price by signing up for a full rental management package.

While prices are rising in Samoens is still represents good value for money – particularly when compared to nearby resorts such as Chamonix and Megeve.

Winter in Samoens

Being part of the Grand Massif, Samoens is a small part of one of the largest ski regions in the French Alps.

 

Popular resorts such as Flaine, Les Carroz and Morillon are all directly linked to Samoens with pistes rising right up to 2,500m around the Tete des Lindars.

 

The new Vercland Gondola opened in 2021/22 after a brief delay due to Covid-19 ensuring that Samoens 1,600 is accessed now in just a short 7 minute gondola ride.

 

The Samoens pistes offer excellent skiing for intermediate skiers while the higher slopes around Flaine offer some more steeper terrain for advanced skiers and off-piste enthusiasts.

 

The long tree-lined slopes back to Les Carroz and Morillon are particularly fun for families with young children.

Summer in Samoens

Being close to Geneva and with good infrastructure, Samoens has always been one of the more popular resorts in the French Alps for summer holidays.


The picture-perfect resort centre is home to busy markets, music, and numerous sporting and cultural events from May through till September. All this with the stunning Haute Savoie mountain range in the background.

 

Samoens has been investing in its summer activities for some time and now attracts plenty of summer tourists all there to enjoy hiking, biking, rock climbing and more.

 

On warm sunny days, the Base de Loisir des Lacs Aux Dames offers families a beautiful spot for swimming and to cool down.

 

For a bit more adrenaline head to the Le Giffre river where with white water rafting, canyoning and kayaking are all on offer.
