Meribel Resort Guide

Primarily renowned for being at the center of the world’s largest ski resort, Meribel is a quaint French village set in the heart of the Three Valleys - or Les Trois Vallees - in the Savoie region of the French Alps. The picture-perfect landscape, with rolling slopes and snow-covered peaks, makes Meribel one of these most desirable places in the French Alps in which to buy a property. With its conventional Chalet-style architecture, Meribel has an authentic alpine charm. Large detached chalets – dotted across the Meribel valley - provide an ideal base for second home buyers or investors looking for a holiday home in the Alps.

Property in Meribel

The demand for properties in Meribel remains consistently high, driven by the resort's reputation, excellent facilities, and strong rental market. The property market in Meribel is divided into three key areas: Meribel Centre, Meribel Village, and Meribel-Mottaret.

Meribel Centre is the heart of the resort, offering a vibrant atmosphere and prime location. This area is filled with a variety of shops, restaurants, and bars. The central location also means easy access to the extensive ski slopes of the Three Valleys ski area, with convenient lift connections to Courchevel and Val Thorens.

Meribel Village, located a short distance from the centre, offers a more tranquil and traditional mountain experience. This charming area is known for its picturesque chalets and stunning alpine views. It's an ideal choice for those seeking a quieter retreat while still being close to the main ski lifts and amenities of the resort.

Meribel-Mottaret, situated at a higher altitude, is perfect for ski enthusiasts who want to maximize their time on the slopes. This area provides excellent ski-in, and ski-out access and is well-connected to the rest of the Three Valleys. The accommodations here range from cosy apartments to luxurious chalets, all with beautiful views of the mountains.

The best apartments and chalets tend to be located in, or just below, Le Rond Point. Here you have direct piste access and stunning westerly views. Le Rond Point is also due to be connected down to Meribel Centre via a new lift that will run well into the evenings. This will save you an uphill walk or taxi journey back after dinner or après ski.

Prices for the best chalets and apartments for sale in this exclusive part of Meribel range from EUR 25,000 - 35,000 / m2 depending on their views and piste access etc. A new 5-star hotel in the Belvedere area is also helping to lift property prices in this exclusive part of Meribel.

If you are looking to buy a more affordable property in Meribel then have a look in the ‘Morel’ area which is still close to the centre but with slightly cheaper prices at EUR 15,000 – 25,000 per m2.

Winter in Meribel

As winter rolls around, the cold winds bring plenty of snow and an army of workers begin to prepare the 600km+ of pistes. Meribel and the other resorts in the Trois Vallees are home to some of the highest skiing in the Alps and often start to come alive during late November and early December.

As part of the Trois Vallees, Meribel has more skiing on its doorstep than any other resort in the world. Whether you enjoy off-piste, steep black runs, or cruising tree-lined blue pistes you will find it on offer in the 3-Valleys.

Méribel is a haven for families and beginners, featuring excellent ski schools and gentle slopes perfect for those just starting. The resort's commitment to providing a family-friendly atmosphere ensures a safe and enjoyable skiing experience for all ages. Méribel's efficient lift system allows for easy access across the vast ski area, maximizing your time on the snow.

The resort caters to skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. Beginners can build confidence in areas like the Altiport, while the more experienced can explore challenging runs like the Combe Vallon or the off-piste opportunities in Mont Vallon.

When it's time for a break, Méribel's mountain restaurants offer a range of dining experiences. Favourites include La Folie Douce for a lively après-ski atmosphere, Le Clos Bernard for a more traditional setting, and Le Rond Point for its sun-soaked terrace. Méribel's nightlife is vibrant, with popular spots like Jack's Bar for live music and O'Sullivans for late-night dancing. For a cosy evening, try La Taverne or Barometer for a more relaxed vibe.

Apart from skiing and snowboarding, Méribel offers a variety of other winter activities. These include paragliding, snowmobiling, and tobogganing. For those seeking relaxation, the resort's wellness centres and spas provide the perfect setting to unwind.

If you fancy a day off from skiing, you will find plenty of other activities on offer during the winter including winter hiking, ice staking, indoor swimming, spas, bowling and much more!

Summer in Meribel

Meribel and the wider French Alps have become increasingly popular in recent years as tourists and property investors wake up to the charms of the French Alps in the summer.

When the snow that caps the mountains in the winter melts away, what is left behind are breathtaking expanses of grassy green rolling hills with plenty of natural lakes and ponds that make ideal spots for some refreshing wild swimming!

Many of the main ski lifts now run through the summer holidays taking hikers and mountain bikers up into the mountains.  For seasoned hikers and bikers, Meribel’s rugged terrain and awe-inspiring landscapes provide an experience unlike any before.

Some of the very best hiking and mountain biking trails that the French Alps have to offer can be found in Meribel during the summertime. The Trois Vallees have a vast network of biking trails with single tracks, downhill tracks, and free-ride areas so that everyone can find the activity that suits them and their level of skill the best.

As you become more acquainted with the area, venture out independently to discover the hidden gems of this beautiful region. For adrenaline seekers, the nearby rivers provide exciting opportunities for white-water rafting.

Take the opportunity to explore the wider Tarentaise Valley with day trips to attractions such as the Vanoise National Park, the town of Annecy, and other charming alpine resorts. Each destination offers its own unique experiences and sights. Indulge in the local Savoyard cuisine, enjoy fresh regional produce, and sample exquisite French wines in the resort's cosy restaurants and cafes, all set against a charming alpine backdrop.

Other summer activities include fishing in the sparkling waters of Lac Tueda, mountain biking, paragliding, golf and plenty of indoor and outdoor swimming areas.
