Montafon Resort Guide

Montafon or "Muntafu" in local dialect is a 39km long valley in the popular Vorarlberg region of Austria and close to Swiss border. This is a picture-perfect region of Austria that includes everything that tourists and property investors are looking for. From quaint villages such as St.Gallenkirch to towering 3,000m+ mountains such as the Piz Buin. The largest ski region – Silvretta Montafon – covers 141kms of piste with over 50% of it above 2,000m. It is now one of the largest and most snow sure ski regions in Austria and was formed after the connection of the Nova and Hochjock ski regions in 2008. Montafon is a popular destination throughout the year. Top summer highlights include the Hochjoch Adventure Mountains where families with children enjoy family-friendly hikes, kids motor sports, high-alpine lakes and some incredible scenery. Property in Montafon

The Vorarlberg region of Austria has long been a favorite for investors looking to buy an Austrian ski chalet or apartment.

Close to Switzerland and easily accessible from Zurich, Innsbruck and Munich airports the area has long attracted international investors looking for easy access, high altitude skiing and charming Austrian towns and villages.

World famous Austrian resorts such as Lech and St Anton now have property prices comparable to the likes of Meribel and Courchevel in France.

More affordable property can be found in the Montafon valley region of the Voralberg. Here studio apartments can be bought from as little as EUR 200,000 and detached chalets from about EUR 1m.

The charming Austrian village of St Gallenkirch is a good place to start your property search. Just be careful to check the legal status of any property since the local laws may dictate what you can and can’t do with your new ski property.

Winter in Montafon

The Silvretta Montafon ski region includes one of the longest pistes in Vorarlberg. The ‘HochjochTotale’ run will take you down a long and scenic piste that drops an incredible 1,700m in altitude!

The region has a quick and modern lift system that you expect from the Austrians and gives access to plenty of family-friendly pistes as well as some easily accessible freeride routes.

For experienced skiers one of the highlights of the region include several “Black Scorpion” pistes with gradients of up to 81 percent as well as the Freeridecross and an extensive backcountry.

For a change of scenery, why not try one of the other ski regions in the Montafon valley? The nearby resorts of Golm, Gargellen, Silbertal-Kristberg and Silvretta-Bielerhöhe can all be easily accessed and add a further 225kms of piste.

Ready for a day off the piste? The Montafon region has plenty on offer including floodlit toboggan run, winter hiking and snow-shoeing routes, cross country skiing and much more.

Summer in Montafon

No sooner that the snow begins to clear in spring, the summer tourists begin to arrive in Montafon and its time to explore the alpine playground on foot or by bike.

Whether you wish to take the family for a leisurely stroll or tackle one of the steeper ‘black’ hiking routes you will find plenty of variety on offer and a tempo to suit everyone. Just be sure to plan your hiking around a hearty Austrian lunch in one of the 26 high-alpine huts.

Montafon has grown as a biking destination in recent years and the e-bike revolution has led to hundreds of new trails being opened up to the more ‘causal’ biker!

Many of the gondolas and cable cars have also been adapted to allow you to take your bikes right up to over 2,000m where you can get above the tree line and enjoy some spectacular Alpine views from the 270kms of trails.

The via Ferratas also give a great introduction to rock climbing – all in safe and controlled manner – with plenty of epic views of the Silvretta mountain range.

Back in the valley there are two 9-hole golf course in Tschagguns and Partenen.
