Winter in Verbier

Verbier is located within the 4 Vallées, the largest ski area in Switzerland, boasting over 410 kilometres of ski runs and more than 80 lifts! The Verbier sector itself features approximately 200 kilometres of slopes and extensive off-piste terrain, making it a popular choice for expert skiers and snowboarders seeking challenging, off-piste skiing.

The high altitude guarantees consistent snow cover from December to through till April. Verbiers key lifts are the Médran lift and the Mont Fort cable car, which reaches the highest point in the 4 Vallées at 3,330m.

Verbier has a variety of options for families, including ski schools, dedicated beginner areas, and activities like ice skating, sledging, and snowshoeing. Les Esserts and La Chaux are ideal for beginners with gentle slopes and learning zones.

For more experienced skiers, there are challenging red and black runs such as the famous Tortin and Mont Fort descents. There are also extensive off-piste areas accessible from Mont Gelé and Mont Fort. Additionally, Verbier is a popular destination for snowboarding, offering the La Chaux Snow Park with jumps, rails, and a half-pipe.

The village offers a wide selection of restaurants, including those serving traditional Swiss fondue, tapas, and sushi. Verbier is famous for its vibrant après-ski scene, with popular bars such as Le Rouge, Pub Mont Fort, and Farinet. Events like Verbier Xtreme, part of the Freeride World Tour, contribute to the lively atmosphere.

Verbier Property Guide

Property in Verbier is some of the most desirable ski property in the world, due to its exclusivity, high demand, and limited supply. Homes in Verbier often come with luxury amenities, beautiful alpine views, and a good mix of traditional Swiss and modern architecture.

The Verbier property market has always been a story of limited supply and high demand. Demand for property in Verbier is consistently high from now only domestic Swiss buyers but also wealthy foreign investors looking to buy a second home in Switzerland.

Unlike many other ski resorts, Verbier has a significant resident population who live there year round. A new international school and increased investment in summer activities have all boosted the appeal of a permanent move to Verbier.

This was particularly true in the years after the Covid-19 pandemic when many Geneva-based workers bought properties in Verbier. With the rise of flexible working many of these people have decided to stay and now call Verbier home year-round.

If you can find one, chalets for sale in Verbier typically start at around CHF 4 million and can easily exceed CHF 10m for the best locations.

Apartments are also in high demand, with prices starting around CHF 800,000 and going up to CHF 3 million, depending on size, amenities, and views.

Verbier’s investment into summer tourism is having a big impact on rental yields. Although many owners choose not to rent out their apartment, those that do can expect above average returns.

Recent investments in Verbier's infrastructure include the underground train station at La Châble, with Switzerland’s first train-to-gondola link, and improved international schools.

These developments will continue to attract more permanent residents to Verbiers already booming property market.

Frequently Asked Questions About Property in Verbier

What is the average price of ski property in Verbier?

Verbier remains one of the most expensive ski resort markets in the world. Average prices for apartments typically range between CHF 20,000 and CHF 30,000 / m2 although this can easily rise to over CHF 40,000 for the ultra-prime property.

Sought-after areas like Les Esserts, or those close to the Medran lift can add an additional price premium.

Chalets in Verbier have become ‘trophy assets’ in the prime alpine market. Chalet here frequently now sell off-market from CHF 10m and much higher.

Entry level prices in Verbier are from CHF 1m for a small apartment requiring renovation.

Is Verbier a good place for property investment?

Verbier is considered "Blue Chip" stock in the Alpine property world. Verbier has historically proven to be relatively recession-proof with transactions simply drying up during periods of global recession rather than owners cutting prices.

The strict "Lex Weber" laws prevent any new second-home construction in Verbier meaning that the market mainly consists of existing resale chalets. Some new-build chalets are available for sale but these are likely to require Swiss residency.

The Verbier property market is highly active and global and therefore ensures better liquidity than many other resorts. The opening of the Verbier International School has shifted the demographic from second home owners to primary residences as many families choose to relocate to the resort year-round.

What makes Verbier unique?

Verbier is the home of European freeriding. The Mont Fort glacier and the legendary Bec des Rosses (host of the Xtreme Verbier final) offer lift-accessible off-piste terrain that is unmatched in terms of steepness and vertical drop.

The nightlife is legendary. It is one of the few places where you might find professional skiers sharing a drink with billionaires and royalty at the Farm Club or Fer à Cheval. In summer, the Verbier Festival turns the town into a world-class classical music hub, attracting a completely different, high-net-worth crowd.
