Morzine Resort Guide

The lively resort of Morzine is the biggest resort in the Portes du Soleil ski region. It is a popular destination for both full time residents and second home owners with many UK and French citizens having made Morzine home. This large, resident population ensure that Morzine is a great place to spend time whatever the season. In the winter, the resort sits at a decent 1,000m altitude with plenty of skiing over 2,000m. In the summer, the resort becomes a giant alpine playground with mountain bikers and hikers attracted by a packed event schedule and live music festivals. The resort is incredibly charming with a buzzing village centre and a great selection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs but, notably, without the crazy prices of some of the other resorts in the French Alps. With its close proximity to Geneva, Morzine is one of the more attractive places in which to invest in a French ski property. You will find a good selection of both old and new-build apartments as well as the odd detached chalet for sale. Morzine’s year-round tourism ensures a higher return for property investors than in some of the other resorts in the French Alps that rely solely on a winter season. Demand for apartments and chalets is strong and investors tend to hold onto their properties for the long run.

Like several other resorts in this part of the French Alps, Morzine originated as an old Farming village and the architecture still reflects this with plenty of old-wood and Savoie slate roofs. Indeed, Morzine is one of the more scenic villages in which to buy a Ski property.

With a full time, resident population of just over 3,000, Morzine is a great place in which to buy a ski property if you are looking for a resort that is busy throughout the year, never ‘shuts down’ entirely, and is not far from Geneva.

What type of apartment or chalet you buy will reflect on how you want to use it. Property buyers who are looking to move to Morzine or stay for longer periods tend to be happy to be slightly further from the ski lifts where prices can be substantially more affordable.

Second home owners, who wish to rent out their ski property for weekly holiday lets would be best to focus on finding an apartment or chalet for sale within a maximum of a five-minute walk of the ‘Super Morzine’ or ‘La Crusaz’ ski lifts since.  It is these prime locations where most guests will wish to stay.

Winter in Morzine

Morzine is the largest resort in the Portes du Soleil and an ideal base from which to explore this vast ski area and its 650kms of pistes!

Depending on your ability you have the option of sticking to the slopes around Morzine and Les Gets where you have 120kms of piste and some great, family-friendly, tree lined runs in some spectacular alpine scenery.

Otherwise, you are able to buy a ski pass that covers the whole Portes du Soleil and reach the high altitude slopes around Avoriaz or even take a trip over into Champery and Switzerland!

Whenever you are feeling like a day off or simply a change of pace you will find plenty of other winter activities happening in and around Morzine centre. There are guided snow shoeing walks, winter hiking trails, cross country skiing, indoor pools, dog sledding and more on offer.

Summer in Morzine

Morzine has developed over the years into one of the France’s most popular alpine resorts for summer activities.

Morzine is widely recognized as one of the best centres in the Alps for mountain biking and road biking and there are now 380kms of tracks and paths to cater for all abilities. It has recently played host to not only the Tour de France but also the Mountain Biking world championships.

In summer, families will love the vast swimming complex at the edge of the Parc des Dereches. Located in the very center of Morzine this is a great place to spend a sunny day with the kids. There is a large outdoor paddling pool, volleyball courts, bouncy castle and waterslide for the kids while adults can enjoy the 50m Olympic swimming pool or a sun longer on the large grass terrace.
